Tomahawk wrap-up | Canoeing | Court of Honor

Hello Troop 1!

Glad that so many of you could make it to Tomahawk.

It was a great week and I certainly enjoyed my time in the woods with all of you!

Scouts who were at camp, I am sending out emails listing any partial merit badges you may have, including the name of any counselors in the Troop and the specific items you need to do to complete the badge. Many of you might be able to do some or all of these requirements before the Court of Honor.

Monday July 29: We are meeting at Lake Nokomis to work on Canoeing Merit Badge.

Please meet at the parking lot on the north side of the lake, by the canoe dock (right down the hill from the Lake Nokomis Community Center).

We'll focus on canoe swamping and rescue requirements. Come to the meeting prepared to get wet! If you have a life vest please bring it to the meeting.

For those who do not want to do Canoeing (or have already earned it), we'll have Troop leadership on hand to work on merit badge completions and rank requirements. If hoping for a Scoutmaster's Conference or arriving for a Board of Review, be sure to bring your Scout handbook and wear your Class A uniform.

Court of Honor: Scheduled for August 19 at Minnehaha United Methodist Church.

This is a Class A uniform event - we will be handing out a LOT of rank awards, merit badges, and other recognition for Scouts and adults. Please consider bringing a treat to share with those attending. We welcome friends and family members who want to be there to see you get recognized for your hard work!

Remember, our advancement team needs lead time to pick up awards and badges. Please turn in completed blue cards as soon as possible to ensure you are recognized at this Court of Honor, otherwise earned awards may not be awarded until the next Court of Honor later this year!

Membership Renewals

Hello Troop 1!

Today I received a reminder email regarding annual registration.

Troop members (Scouts and adults) will need to renew their registrations before August 31. If you do not renew before end of August, Scouts will drop off of Scoutbook and we will not be able to record advancement.

You can renew your membership in my.scouting.org - log in, then click "My Application" and look for the tab marked "My Renewals". You should also have received an email from BSA with a direct link to your renewal information.

A few notes: Our local council used to handle registration, but starting this program year we're being asked to use the national BSA registration links in my.scouting.org. Remember that you are always free to request support for membership fees (and we encourage you to do so if it helps keep you active in Troop 1!)

For those of you who will be at Tomahawk, I look forward to hanging out with you for the week.

Remember that for our first post-summer camp Troop meeting, we are meeting at Lake Nokomis on Monday July 29 to work on Canoeing Merit Badge.

Upcoming meeting plans

Hello Troop 1!

The Patrol Leader's Council met last week and has set plans for the next month of meetings. Unless otherwise noted, all meetings are planned to occur at Minnehaha United Methodist Church at 6:30 PM.

The PLC would like to have time for a game at the end of the meetings, which cannot happen unless we meet on time and start on time - Do Your Best to help make this happen!

This is a long list of plans so PLEASE read carefully.

Monday July 15: Tomahawk Camp Preparation and Patrol Box Party.

Come ready to help the troop get our gear in shape for summer camp! For those attending camp, we will have some reminders, packing information, and required camp safety discussion. We will also be working on checking Troop gear and ensuring all 4 patrol boxes are fully stocked and ready for camp.

Note to adults who are attending camp: One of those patrol boxes is for us. Wouldn't be a bad idea to lend a hand in checking it, as directed by the Troop quartermasters!

Monday July 22: No meeting - most of the Troop will be at Tomahawk.

Monday July 29: Canoeing Merit Badge and BWCA Crew B Pre-Trip Planning, meeting at Lake Nokomis small beach.

BWCA Crew B members will be discussing plans for their upcoming trip and locking in their crew positions and food menu. Other Scouts will be working on Canoeing Merit Badge. For BWCA Crew B members who want to work on Canoeing, pick up a blue card from me and work through remaining requirements on your trip!

Monday August 5: Troop Elections, First Class First Aid, and BWCA Crew B Gear Check.

Come ready to vote for your new Troop leadership - if you want to run for Senior Patrol Leader or Assistant SPL, be prepared to deliver a short speech (1 minute or less!) to convince your peers you are the right Scout for the job! We'll also elect Patrol Leaders and other key positions.

BWCA Crew B attendees will be picking up Troop gear needed for their trip (Duluth packs, stoves, first aid kit, tents, cookware) and ensuring all is good to go.

Scouts who need first aid requirements signed off will work with older Scouts to complete them. For those at Star rank, remember that a Life requirement can be satisfied by teaching these skills to another scout using the EDGE method - come prepared!

  • Important note: August 5 is the cutoff date for advancement requirements for the Court of Honor. If you are working on completing a badge or rank, make sure you have turned in the appropriate completion records to our Advancement Chair by this date!
  • Running for a position, but will not be able to attend? Let your SPL and Scoutmaster know your intent to run so that we can ensure you are on the ballot!

Monday August 12: First Class Knots and Lashings and Court of Honor Prep.

With BWCA Crew B still on the water, we will focus on helping our newer Scouts complete advancement requirements and discuss with the Hot Dogs what a Court of Honor is and how it works in the Troop. (If no one needs knots and lashings, we'll work on a different advancement item!)

Monday August 19: Court of Honor.

Wear your best Class A uniform and bring a treat to share if you wish - we have a LOT of advancement to recognize! Multiple ranks and many, many Merit Badges. We will also swear in our new Troop leadership. For those on our two High Adventure crews to BWCA, please Be Prepared to provide narration for a slide show of photos from the trips!

Monday August 26: Patrol Leader's Council. Our newly-elected leaders will meet to plan the next month of activities.

Good Scouting!

Meeting Monday | BWCA Crew A

Troop meeting Monday, 6:30PM, Minnehaha United Methodist Church. The Patrol Leaders Council planned to work on knots for advancement requirements for the meeting. Scouts who are working towards First Class (Half-Burnt Hot Dogs, this means you!) should bring your Scout handbooks to the meeting. If you don't have your book with you, we can't sign off on requirements!

A reminder that BWCA Crew A will be on the water this week, so Mr. Needleman and I will not be at the troop meeting. If you are on the BWCA crew, we'll see you at 9AM Monday to review gear, pack vehicles, and hit the road. Remember to be in full Class A - Scouts travel in uniform.

In going through troop gear in prep for BWCA we noticed that we are low on tents - if you happen to have a troop tent at home after using it for camp, please remember to bring it back to the Scout shed after it has aired out. The tents are there for scouts to use, but you should remember to return it afterwards - and please let the Quartermaster know if any tent you use is in disrepair or is missing any parts!

Potbelly Fundraiser | Philmont Garage Sale

Hello Troop 1 - Two fundraiser opportunities for our troop to support outdoor activities and high adventure.

Potbelly fundraiser: This one is easy! Share the attached flyer with your friends and neighbors. All sales at the 2130 Ford Parkway Potbelly sandwich shop from 4:30-7:30 PM on Wednesday May 29 will benefit Troop 1. Please let people know that they do NOT need the physical flyer, they can show it on their phone or say they are there to support Troop 1.

Philmont Garage Sale: The Philmont 2025 crew is holding a garage sale at Minnehaha United Methodist Church on Saturday June 1 from 8AM through 1PM (or until we run out of items!). Philmont crew members should look for items they can sell in the sale to benefit the group, and should plan on being present to help with the sale. The crew is also welcoming donations of items for the sale, from anyone in the Troop who wants to support the high adventure crew. Items for the garage sale can be dropped off Friday night or early Saturday morning (7:30AM). For Friday drop-offs, contact me so that we can ensure someone will be able to meet you at MUMC to secure the items you are donating.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend - and don't forget about the service hours opportunities to honor our Veterans! If you are unable to participate in any Memorial Day service opportunities, please consider registering for flag PICK UP at Fort Snelling National Cemetery - the 16,000 flags to be placed at gravesites this weekend need to be picked up again NEXT weekend, and the group organizing this is in need of volunteers to assist. Upcoming Meetings and Events

Hello scouts - Following up from tonight's Patrol Leaders Council: A few upcoming events to note. This is a long list, please read carefully - it's a busy schedule for the near future!

Saturday May 25/Sunday May 26: Theo H's Eagle Project, 1919 La Salle Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55403 - building a food shelf pantry. Message from Theo:

Help needed Saturday the 25th 12-3 pm and Sunday the 26th 1-4 pm. I would love 4-5 people for Saturday and a few more on Sunday. Saturday would be priming and painting the lumber as well as digging post holes and installing them with concrete. Sunday is putting the constructed pantry onto the posts and finishing touches. If parents are interested they are welcome as well, especially for driving scouts. Hopefully two different days doesn’t cause problems. We’ll offer lunch on Saturday. If kids need rides I can help organize one for them. Please fill out the Google form to RSVP for either day.

Thank you!

Monday May 27: No Troop meeting on Memorial Day. If you are able to help, please attend the Soldier's and Pioneer's Cemetery service hour opportunity at 8:15 AM on Monday in lieu of the normal troop meeting.

Saturday June 1: Philmont Garage Sale is planned at MUMC. We're asking the Troop to donate items toward the sale. Proceeds of the sale will support the Philmont 2025 crew. Philmont crew members should plan to be present to help with the sale. We'll send more details. If you have items to donate but cannot be there on June 1, please contact Dr. Nixon to arrange a drop-off time before the sale,

Sunday June 2: Pack 1 Crossover, Base Camp. We need a contingent of Scouts to attend the Pack 1 Blue & Gold to help welcome our newest patrol, the Half Burnt Hot Dogs. Class As, be there by 4:45 PM.

Monday June 3: Troop meeting/Swim Tests, Lake Nokomis small beach. This is our regular Troop meeting but it's also a chance to get wet. Those attending Summer Camp or Boundary Waters should be present! We're hoping to have two certified life guards on hand to approve our swim test results. (Can't make it, but going to summer camp? You can still do your annual swim test at Tomahawk.)
