Many Point Update • Summer Camp
Week 8 • Aug 9-Aug 15
I attended a three hour Many Point Orientation on Saturday and can tell you we are in for an absolute treat this summer.

Many Point runs Sunday to Saturday, a bit different than Tomahawk. That's not all that's different. Northern Star Council has worked hard to ensure these summer camps are unique.

We'll be staying in Two Harbors campsite in Voyageur Sub-Camp. Different than summers at Tomahawk when we ate in the dining hall, we'll be cooking as patrols, and preparing all of our meals in our campsite.

Youth Leadership at Camp
Being SPL at Many Point is a crown jewel of leadership - akin to being crew chief at Philmont. Tomahawk is more of a Troop-based experience and SPL is in charge at camp. Many Point ratchets this up a notch with our patrol-based camping and cooking. Patrol Leader and SPL become the most important jobs. PLs make camp happen in camp, and SPL makes camp happen throughout the Sub-Camp. One thing that will make this camp a success is strong youth leadership. Getting to lead "non-stop" for a week is an awesome opportunity. Start thinking now about if you're interested in being Patrol Leader SPL for this experience. SPL attends a daily leadership class instead of 1 merit badge session. Elections for this will be in June.

Troop 1 Summer Camp Adult Survey - We're trying to figure out exactly which adults will be in camp, when they'll be there, and our ability to transport Scouts to and from camp. If we're unable to come up with enough adults to transport our Troop, we'll need to add an expense of bus or van rental.

Family Camp - If you'd like to have a family vacation while your scout is at Camp, consider Family camp. By all reports its an awesome time. They have cabins stocked with kitchen items, you bring the food. There are also RV sites and tent sites. They provide program, lots of program. The Troop would invite you over to camp for dinner and an evening campfire, at least once during the week. If you're interested, don't hesitate to make your reservations, these openings will fill up fast.

Older Scout Program • These are awarded
There are three tiers of unique programming for "Older Scouts"
Tier 1 (Scouts entering 8th grade) - a one evening opportunity.
Tier 2 (Scouts entering 9th grade) - a single day-long adventure. You can
Teir 3 (Scouts entering 9th grade) a weeklong high-adventure each day in the mornings.
Program Sign-Up will be ready in a couple weeks. For now, start arranging your summer PLANS and start working on your loon calls!

RAD Zoo
We'll be attending an overnighter at the  Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo in Owatonna on Friday night, March 20- Saturday Morning March 21. We'll follow our stay with some service at Feed My Starving Children in Eagan, returning to MUMC by 11am.

We will be visiting their new location in the Owatonna outlet mall. They will have just moved in so we'll be one of the first groups they host in their new space.

Many Scouts have been working on Reptil and Amphibian Study MB. Last year we hosted a counselor before our trip and many scouts have been caring for reptiles or studying them over the past year. If you're interested in completing the Merit Badge,

We may be able to cover many requirements at the RAD Zoo.

This camp open to AoL scouts (aka Electric Llamas), and families.

SUMMER PLANNING
Attending Summer Camp is a highlight of summer for most scouts. This year we'll be up north in Pondsford, MN near the Mississippi Headwaters at Camp Many Point. We like as much of the troop to attend Summer Camp as possible. Not only is it a great time to be with friends doing things scouts do, but it's also a great adventure and a fantastic opportunity for advancement. Younger scouts will work on First Class adventure and older scouts will work on a variety of Merit Badges. Cooking is done at our campsite by patrol. We haven't been to Many Point in several years and are excited to go back. Please mark your calendars now.
Also, we should know the dates of the SHT trip before Winter Break.

Summer Camp - August 9-15, Camp Many Point

We will have a Sign Up in February, please keep your eyes open. Do some research above.

Superior Hiking Trail - 27 June 2020 - Weds 1- July or Thursday, 2 July 2020

Scoutmaster Minute • Empathy of Popped Corn
When we make popcorn at camp, we do it in a pot with oil. While it's not from the same ear, it comes out of the same container. It is prepared in the same pot, with the same oil, the same heat, and yet... the kernels don't pop at the same time. Don't judge others when they pop, your time is coming. And when you do, we'll remember our scout law and show empathy. A scout is helpful, friendly, and kind.
