4 November 2019

Troop Meeting • Monday, 6:30-8:00pm • MUMC
At the troop meeting Monday we'll mostly be doing campout preparations. But we'll be doing some pioneering basics and work on some basic knots and lashings.
Tonight = Pioneering Books, Knots & Lashings.

Campout Prep: Menu planning. Deciding on grub masters ($10/person/patrol), figuring out what gear we need to camp and cook, and start on some duty rosters.

I will not be at the meeting on Monday (work). I will be attending camp, though I have to leave for part of the day Saturday (work).

Circus of the Heart Recap

Scouts and adults packaged, served, and cleaned lunches for about 1000 people at the MN Zoo for an event put on by MN Adopt. Troop 1 scouts represented well. We worked hard, remained cheerful and helpful, and overall did a good job which reflects not only on each of you but our Troop and Scouts BSA overall. The assistant director of DHS spoke with one of the adults in the Troop and was very impressed with our scouts.

Wreaths & Popcorn
Wreath Pick up is Nov 23, 9-11 at Northrup School. We not only need you to pick up your wreath order, but we also need help sorting things off the truck.

Popcorn orders will be ready for pick up at MUMC on Monday, 11/4, at the start of the meeting.  If you are unable to pick up your order at Monday’s meeting, please let Mrs. Barber know before 5:00pm so she doesn’t haul it to the church for no reason. You can text or email her to make other arraignments. See her email.

November 8-10 • Pioneering Boot Camp • Collopy Farm
Sign up to Camp at the Collopy Farm. We were there last spring and had a blast. This time we're avoiding fish hooks.
Here's a link to our Troop Pioneering Booklet. This was put together by Scoutmaster CG himself, Clarke Green.

Based on some PLC decisions, we have decided to change things up a little this year. We'll still be at Kiwanis, but our gaming will take place in Gordon Hall!

There will be plenty of room for us to leave our games up and move on to something else. We'll be sleeping and "cooking" elsewhere.

Register for Scouting in 2020
You may have recently received mail about fees for Scouting going up. They're not going up for us in Metro Lakes District. They're going up for the rest of the council. That said, nobody is turned away for an inability to pay the full amount.

If you don't register before the January 1, things get messy with getting dropped from our roster, etc. Please don't make extra work for our volunteers.
If you don't plan to continue in Troop 1 next year, please reach out and let me know.

Scoutmaster Corps and Committee Registrations are paid for and handled by the troop - thanks for volunteering, you don't need to register yourself.
Please get registered for 2020, ASAP

Scoutmaster's Minute - Scout Handshake
Our Scout salute and handshake are ancient signs of bravery and respect. The normal right-hand handshake comes from the times when men carried weapons such as swords or guns for their own protection. When they met one another, there was an uneasy moment as each watched the other's right hand. If it went to his sword or gun, there was a battle, but if it went to his hat it was a salute of friendship or respect.

The handshake is similar - outstretching your right-hand shows it is empty and you are friendly.

The left-hand shake comes to us from the Ashanti warriors whom Baden-Powell met long ago in Africa. He saluted them with his right hand, but the Ashanti chieftain offered his left hand and said: 'In our land, only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand because to do so we must drop our shields and our protection.'
