SCOUTMASTER'S MINUTE
Nearly 600 years ago, the first recognizable form of the game of golf was played in Scotland.  Over these years the golf ball has evolved.

There are four distinct recognizable stages in the evolution of the golf ball. There is some speculation that the very first golf balls were simply round rocks.

The first recorded stage involves wooden golf balls. One can imagine how inefficient these wooden balls had to of been.  Especially when struck with a wooden golf club. Maybe this is about the time in the evolution of the game that yelling “Fore!” began as rouge wooden golf balls were flying in all directions.

The second stage was the feathery golf balls.  These were basically leather sacks stuffed with goose feathers. The ball was used for a little over 400 years! The making of this ball was so time-consuming that it was usually sold for more than the club itself. This ball was better than the wood golf ball… but still not very accurate.

The third stage was the Gutty.  This golf ball was only around for about fifty years but changed the game.  Rather than wood or stuffed leather, this ball was made from the dried sap of the Sapodilla tree.  Having more of a rubber-like feel, the sap was heated and formed into ball shapes.  It was with this ball that players discovered that the ball was more accurate after it was played with for a while and received little dents and divots. Hammering handmade divot came into practice with this ball.

The final stage, rubber core golf balls. Replacing the gutty in 1899, this new design with the modern divots we are used to, improved airflow while soaring to the green.

It’s amazing over the past 600 years, that through trial and error, it was discovered that the little dents and divots in a golf ball make it play better.

When you think about it, Scouting is a lot like these golf balls. Each time we pass off a requirement for a rank advancement, earn a new merit badge, or even fail at a task during camp, we get a dent or divot. The more that we learn, and experience, adds more dimples and dents to our golf ball.  This in turn makes us go farther and straighter down your scouting career. Eventually, as you learn to effectively deploy our scout craft skills, citizenship responsibilities, and leadership skills you will soar so far and straight that you will eventually be flying with the Eagles.

TROOP MEETING MONDAY
We will have a troop meeting Monday night. In-Person at MUMC. 6:30pm-8:00pm.
We'll be planning for our campout. Gear, Menu etc. Reminder to Sign up for camp before Tomorrow!
We'll also be meeting with the AoL Den to get them acquainted with how the troop works and learning some fun stuff.

Masks are still required. Despite the recent change, Troop 1 will continue to require masks.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE
Thanks to everybody who participated in our Simpls Soup Fundraiser. The troop netted $1100. It was certainly the most delicious fundraiser I've participated in. We'll be doing another one this fall in place of the Pancake breakfast.

The Philmont Crew sale was also very successful yesterday. Thanks to all who participated and special thanks to the Rozaitis/Wempner family for hosting and to Hillary for the Facebook event!

CAMPING

May 14-June 16 at Wild River State Park Group Site 7

We'll be camping! This is a purposeful Back-to-the-Woods / "program-free" campout (other than the Philmont crew) but will likely have some advancement opportunities. Scouts should have their Scout handbook. The Philmont Crew will be backpacking all day on Saturday, simulating a backpacking trip.

HEALTH FORMS - All participants must have a completed BSA Health Form part A & B to participate.

PACKING - If you're not sure what to pack for a weekend campout, check the Scout Handbook. Also here's a list from Scout's Life Magazine

Philmont crew: should pack as they will for SHT & Philmont.

COST - Scouts pay $10 for food. Menus to be planned by patrol(s)/crew on Monday, May 10.

PATROL & TROOP GEAR - Prepped and taken from shed on Monday, May 10 - Dutch Oven(s), Patrol Box(es), tents, etc.

CAMPING DURING COVID-19 • TROOP 1 REQUIREMENTS
1 - All participants must have a negative Covid-19 test after May 7 (within 7 days of departure), and anybody experiencing any cold-like or Covid-19 symptoms will be asked to not participate. I recommend the airport - super fast saliva test and super fast (next day) results.  Be prepared to share results on Friday, May 14.

2- Any Scout sent home from school/sports due to direct exposure should follow the 7-day quarantine rule by MDH unless the direct exposure is within your household. Then follow the 14-day rule. Obviously, participating in this campout cannot happen within the quarantine period.

3- Despite the recent change in MN requirements, Troop 1 will continue to require masks.

4- Scouts will tent alone (mask-free) or with a family member.

5- Adults will drive their own scout to camp. We will NOT meet at MUMC on Friday.
Scouts should meet at Wild River Group Site #7 at about 7:30pm. It is about a 1:10 drive from MPLS.

FROM THE ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE
Scouts requesting a Board of Review need to do this in this order:
1. Complete all requirements for rank advancement AND have them signed off in your Scout Handbook AND enter them or have them entered into ScoutBook. For the time being, because of Covid and not having in-person meetings for a long time, a copy of your ScoutBook Advancement Report is okay if your Handbook isn't current.

2. When No. 1 is all done, schedule a Scoutmaster Conference with Mr. Needleman. Mr. Needleman will then let the Advancement Committee know that you're ready for a Board of Review.

PHILMONT CREW

We've decided that we'll get the Basic Wicking T-Shirt; Itinerary Print; Dried Sage, color with 3 Text lines:
BSA TROOP 1 • CREW 716D
MINNEAPOLIS, MN
JULY 16-28, 2021
The shirts cost ≈ $25/ea. The cost of one shirt was factored into the overall Philmont Budget.
Please complete the Shirt Order with your size and number of shirts ASAP. I plan to place the order May 18.

Troop Meeting Monday

We will have a troop meeting Monday night. 6:30pm-8:00pm.

The PLC has planned some solid meetings around a musical theme. We'll be doing some skills work at 6:30, learning about the Simpl Soups fundraiser 7:00pm (see Ann Wempner's email), and then doing some instrument show and tell for the remainder of the meeting (please fill out the form if you play an instrument).

Simpl Soups Fundraiser (Troop Fundraiser)
As a replacement for car washes and pancake breakfasts that aren’t happening at this time, we are trying a new delicious and easy fundraiser for our troop, and it starts tomorrow!

STEPS:
*Starting April 5, personalize the email text sent by Ann Wempner and send it to your family and friends who are within the large delivery area (p2 of pdf), and be sure to include the pdf linked, "Simpls Delicious Soups". (To remove formatting of text in email, copy text and paste into word or text editor, then copy and paste into new email.)

*Post the www.simpls.com website link along with promo code BST1 to social media accounts

*Remind friends and family they can order as many times as they like from April 5 to May 2.

Notes: There is a minimum order of 2 quarts of soup. Delivery is $5, but is free with a $60 purchase. Our troop will earn $4 for each quart of soup purchased. They also have some yummy sides like soft pretzels and cookies.

Noodles & Co. Fundraiser Night • April 18, 4-8pm
Help the Philmont Crew raise some money for their trip in July and eat some yummy food while you do it.
Order out April 18, 4-8pm at the Richfield Noodles & Co. 1732 E 66th St, Richfield, MN55423  and mention Troop 1 Fundraiser. For online and Noodles Rewards app orders, guests can apply the coupon code, “GIVING25” in the Coupon Code line at checkout.
The Philmont crew will get 25% of all qualifying online and in-restaurant sales. Be sure to invite your friends on Social Media and emails.  See Linked Flyer

Free Camp Physicals & Health Forms

Anybody camping more than a weekend must have a BSA health form with parts ABC. Part C is the "physical" which needs to be filled by a professional. Check with your health ins, usually an annual physical is free. If not there is a great free option provided by Dr. Tashjian and crew of volunteer Doctors. They will provide Free Physicals for Summer Camp on May 8, 2021 from 9am to 3pm at Base Camp.
http://manypoint.org/event/free-physicals-day/

You'll need to register ahead of time, ASAP to secure a spot.

Philmont crew we do need to scan and upload our health forms to the Philmont portal ahead of time. We’ll collect those and get it done. Philmont crew - risk disclosures included for your (and the Dr.’s) reading pleasure.

Scoutmaster's Minute

Brave or Afraid
Who is more brave - the Tenderfoot that walks to the latrine on a campout at 2am or the Life Scout that rescues a drowning little 6 year old?

Bravery doesn't really depend on the Task being done. It depends on the internal challenge overcome to perform the task. That Tenderfoot may have been very brave to walk all alone in the pitch black to the latrine instead of chickening out and using the bushes right next to his tent. That Life Scout may have had no concerns with going into 5 feet of water.

A good definition of Bravery is: "a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger of pain without showing fear."

Being brave is not being unafraid - quite the opposite; fear and bravery go hand in hand. When you are afraid and can still do what needs to be done, now THAT is being brave.

Whether that is saving someone in danger, sticking up for a new kid at school, or telling someone about your beliefs - there are many situations where you can be brave or cowardly. You find out a lot about who you really are when you find yourself in those situations.

One of the bravest things I ever did was getting up the nerve to turn the lights off in my bedroom as a kid, but that's another story. :-)
