16 Dec 2019

Court of Honor • Monday, 6:30-8:00pm • MUMC
Instead of a meeting, we'll be holding a Court of Honor to recognize the advancements of our scouts over the last quarter. We'll need all hands on deck for set-up at 6:30. The CoH program will begin at 7:00. We will be in the gym as there is also a Pack Meeting.

Anderson Beck will be serving as our MC. Each family should bring a dessert to share.

We are also hosting a donation drive for the Crisis Nursery - if you are able to provide a donation, please do so. ASM Tuesdae Collopy is organizing collection of any donated items brought to the Court of Honor and the Pack meeting (same night); you can also make donations online directly to the group. The Minneapolis Crisis Nursery has been working to end child abuse and serve families in need for over 25 years.

We'd like Troop 1 to make a significant donation. Link for online donations:
https://www.crisisnursery.org/donate/donate-items/

Please remember that the Nursery is always in need of non-toy items as
well! The link above and attachment here have information on current
needs and donation guidelines.

ELECTION Results - the NEW PLC will be announced at the CoH.

Board Game Camp Report
I'm happy to Board Game Camp success! Our use of expanded facilities helped to create a more positive experience than last year. We had several extended games of Monopoly, Risk Europe, Star Wars X-Wing 2.0, Catan, Pandemic, Secret Hitler, Memoir 44, and other board games.

ASM Travis Beck whittled a foosball which enabled good use of the provided table. We had a pretty epic game of indoor Hide-n-Seek. Despite the cold, we made it outside for a troop game of Capture the Flag and some patrol-based sledding. I'm sure there'll be stories.

While some of us longed for radiator grilled cheese, Patrol menus were generally much better this year than year's past. At our Thorns, Buds, & Roses reflection this morning, a lot of great ideas were shared to make next year's camp even better including a "troop-wide" feast on Saturday Night. I suspect Saturday night's cobblers (cooked in the fireplace) and the larger space was some inspiration for the feast recommendation.

Here is a link to Photos, the other leaders will be adding photos so this album so be sure to check back in a couple days.

Register for Scouting in 2020

You may have recently received mail about fees for Scouting going up. They're not going up for us in Metro Lakes District. They're going up for the rest of the council. That said, nobody is turned away for an inability to pay the full amount.

If you don't register before the January 1, things get messy with getting dropped from our roster, etc. Please don't make extra work for our volunteers.

If you don't plan to continue in Troop 1 next year, please reach out and let me know.

Scoutmaster Corps and Committee Registrations are paid for and handled by the troop - thanks for volunteering, you don't need to register yourself.

Please get registered for 2020, ASAP

Other Down Hill Ski Opportunities
The best way to make winter in MN tolerable is to embrace the 6 months of winter with great activities. If you like to downhill Ski, skiing with Scouts can be a little cheaper and more fun.

Several of the local hills have "Scout Days" with discounted rates. I've compiled a list of below.

SUMMER PLANNING
Attending Summer Camp is a highlight of summer for most scouts. This year we'll be up north in Pondsford, MN near the Mississippi Headwaters at Camp Many Point. We like as much of the troop to attend Summer Camp as possible. Not only is it a great time to be with friends doing things scouts do, but it's also a great adventure and a fantastic opportunity for advancement. Younger scouts will work on First Class adventure and older scouts will work on a variety of Merit Badges. Cooking is done at our campsite by patrol. We haven't been to Many Point in several years and are excited to go back. Please mark your calendars now.
Also, we should know the dates of the SHT trip before Winter Break.

Scoutmaster Minute • Just One More Degree
As we close out 2019 and prepare for all the resolutions and goals of a new year, remember how much affect just a little more effort can have. At 211º water is really hot. At 212º Water boils and creates steam. Steam can power factories. Steam can take tons of materials and people and transfer across the world via rail and boat. We should all make a plan to try a little harder and find where our degree is going to be applied in 2020.
