PLC tonight, 6:30 PM | Philmont Crew Meeting, 8PM

Hello Troop 1 - reminder that there is a Patrol Leader's Council meeting tonight, 6:30 PM at Minnehaha United Methodist Church. The Troop normally plans a Patrol Leader's Council (PLC) for Mondays immediately following camp.

The PLC is a meeting where Scouts plan the next month of activities. Everyone is welcome to attend, but the Patrol Leaders, Senior and Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, and Scribe are expected to be present.

Patrol Leaders: If you cannot make the meeting, please ensure that your Assistant Patrol Leader or another member of your patrol attends.

Scouts: Are you stuck on a specific advancement requirement? It's highly likely that many other Scouts also need this requirement! Take advantage of the PLC. Ask your Patrol Leader to suggest working on this requirement as a group, or attend the PLC and advocate for this yourself.

Philmont Crew: Reminder that we have a crew meeting tonight at 8PM, after the PLC. If not attending PLC, remember to show up for the crew meeting.

For those coming to the PLC, see you tonight at 6:30 - for all others, we will see you at the next Troop meeting on Monday May 19!

Court of Honor postponed due to weather | Pivot to online meeting for camp planning

Hello Troop 1!

Due to inclement weather we are POSTPONING the Court of Honor. We do not want anyone risking a drive in bad weather for this event.

We will do our best to reschedule the Court of Honor for next Monday, May 5, provided the church can accommodate the change in date.

Spring Camporee is the weekend of May 9-11. Ordinarily we would be planning camp menu for the weekend during the Troop meeting right before camp. If we are holding the Court of Honor on May 5, we will need to perform camp planning at an alternate time.

Please watch your email for an invite to a Zoom meeting for camp planning. We will ask all those who intend to be at the Camporee to join this meeting.

If you have not yet signed up for the Camporee, please do so if you wish to attend! Registration will close very soon - there are plenty of open spots available but they can fill up quickly as other Troops register to attend.

10 mile hike Saturday | Camp Sign-Up

Hey Troop 1!

10 Mile Hike

Philmont crew has a 10 mile hike scheduled for Saturday at 8 AM. If you are interested in joining us, please meet at Minnehaha United Methodist Church tomorrow morning. Bring a water bottle and something to eat for lunch. At typical Scout walking speed, hikes are usually done around 1PM.

Philmont crew, I strongly suggest you wear the backpack you intend to bring on trail while on our trek. Load with your usual weekend camp gear and at least 2 liters of water for weight. Using your actual camp gear is the best way to add weight to your pack. Getting used to your pack, and getting used to how you want to load it out, are important parts of preparing for the trip!

Tomahawk Summer Camp sign-ups are open.

If you plan to attend summer camp, please submit your registration form as soon as possible.

Summer camp registration happens in two steps:

  1. You submit the Google form indicating your top choices for activities and merit badges.
  2. I use your form to register you with Tomahawk to try and lock in your choices.

If you do not do step 1, I can't do step 2. Individual programs at Tomahawk can fill up fast. If you want your top choices, make sure you submit the Google form before program selection opens for your age group.

  • Camp program selection is open NOW for Scouts 16+
  • Selection opens for Scouts 14+ on April 22
  • Selection opens for all age groups on April 29

As a reminder, the Troop registers with Tomahawk as a group. Scouts should not be submitting registration requests on the Council camp sign-up pages. We take care of that for you - but you do need to fill the Troop Google form to ensure we know that you want to go to camp!

Camp this weekend | Troop meeting & elections Monday

Hello Troop 1!

For those camping at Stearns this weekend, it looks like great weather. Remember that we are in tents and cooking/eating outdoors. We hope to run some orienteering course work for those who need it for Second Class or First Class rank. If you have a compass, please bring it!

On Monday we have two important tasks: First, all advancement to be awarded at the Court of Honor is due. Please bring your completed blue cards - if a Board of Review is needed, contact Lacey Welter now to determine if there is time to schedule this! Advancement recorded after Monday may not be recognized at the April Court of Honor.

Second, we will hold Troop elections. Persons elected to new positions will be inducted into those roles at the Court of Honor. If you are not sure what positions are available, please see the descriptions on the Troop website!

https://www.troop1mn.org/about/youth-leadership

Remember that to advance to Star, Life, or Eagle rank Scouts must serve in a position of responsibility. If you are First Class or above, consider which position you would like to fill and begin planning your "sales pitch" to the Troop on why you would be a good candidate for elected leadership positions.

If you are angling for an appointed position, come to the meeting ready to talk to your Scoutmasters to explain why you would be a good fit for those roles.

Camp Registrations

Hello Troop 1!

Your Patrol Leader's Council met last night and planned out meetings through early May. We have camps planned for April and May. We are also starting to prepare for Summer Camp at Tomahawk.

April 11-13: Back to the Woods Camp @ Stearns. We will be tent camping with the Melted Marshmallow Patrol. We will be cooking as patrols. This is an unstructured, do-what-you-wish campout. It's an excellent opportunity to focus on advancement or Merit Badge requirements!

May 9-11: Spring Camporee @ Phillippo. The theme for this year's Camporee is Scout Chef Showdown. Patrols, plan your best and most impressive camp meals! This is the time for your Dutch oven cooking skills to shine.

August 3-9: Summer Camp @ Tomahawk (Quapaw site, Sioux subcamp). If you've never been to Summer Camp with Troop 1, get registered - you don't want to miss it. Summer Camp is the highlight of the summer for most Scouts! This is your best chance to complete a lot of Merit Badges and get a jump start on advancement towards your next rank.

Summer Camp registration should be completed as soon as possible. Many programs and activities fill up fast, especially those for older scouts. Submit your registration form now, so that Troop leadership can get you registered as soon as programs open up.

Remember, sign up forms for all Troop 1 camps can always be found on the Troop website at https://www.troop1mn.org/events/register-for-camp

Snow Day - Service Opportunities

Hello Troop 1!

Even at the end of winter there is something magical about waking up to a world transformed by fresh snow. The snow is also an opportunity to be a good Scout.

I was late to work today because I took this opportunity. I stopped to help a group of complete strangers push a car out of a snowbank. My reward is knowing that I did something small to make someone else's day just a little better. It didn't take much of my time, and it made me feel good to help.

Whether you are doing a snow day, or school from home, think about how you might make someone else's day just a little bit better today. That's what Troop 1 is about.
