High Adventure Summer '23
We are going to do a local-ish High Adventure trip in Summer of '23. Most scouts are welcome on this trip, if interested. There will be some light participation requirements so this isn't one of your first campouts.
We will be discussing what we want to do this month and decide whether it will be a backpacking trip or

Scoutmaster's Minute

On 'Splendid Table' (NPR) Christmas morning 2021, Francis Lam said "Light shines most in the darkness." This seems to be well paired with a quote from Leia Organa, "Hope is like the sun. If you only believe in things when you can see them, you'll never make it through the night."

TROOP MEETING MONDAY

We will have a troop meeting Monday night. In-Person at MUMC. 18:30-20:00.

All Scouts heading to summer camp should make every effort to be present.

We will conduct elections for PLs, SPL, ASPLs, for Summer Camp through Sept. We also will get the remainder of our Troop gear from the Shed as we’ll be meeting offsite before departure on Sunday due to outdoor church services at MUMC. Scouts are encouraged to check out merit badge books from the troop’s library inside MUMC for any merit badges they’ll be studying at camp. Please note the troop’s library is limited. Scouts learn more is they have the MB pamphlet so I encourage them to have one.

Ann Wempner will be handing out the new blue Troop 1 Class Bs, if you haven’t gotten one.

Tomahawk Class B - we’ll distribute them Monday, or you’ll get them at camp.

TOMAHAWK DETAILS

This message is long, but includes a lot of important information regarding camp preparations; please read all the way through and check the links.

Scoutmaster's Minute - Goose Sense

You've probably heard the old joke, "Do you know why when geese fly in a V formation one side is longer? Because there are more Geese on that side."

But do you know why when geese fly in a V formation in the first place? I learned this in my favorite movie, Winged Migration.

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation, the whole flock greatly increases its flying range by reducing the amount of work each bird needs to do. If a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird ahead of it.

If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

When the V formation's lead goose gets tired, it rotates back in the V and another goose flies the point. We should each take on the extra work of leading in our turn to benefit the group.

Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. They aren't yelling at them - they are encouraging them and trying to help them along because they know they will soon be in that position.

If we have the sense of a goose, we will support each other, encourage each other, and lead in our turn.
