Fundraiser Kickoff / Parent Meeting / Troop Meeting • Monday, 6:30-8:00pm • MUMC

 Our Troop meeting Monday night is VERY important!!!

Hopefully, you received Melissa Barber's email earlier today. We will be holding our fundraiser kickoff informational meeting from 6:30-7:15 which will be followed by a more general topic parent information meeting held with the troop committee. Scouts and Parents should make every attempt to attend. 

Additionally, Scouts attending the Camporee will finish menu planning.

Submissions are due by the Oct 7 Meeting. 

All scouts are welcome to participate. 
Will we be backpacking Isle Royale or on the Superior Hiking Trail? Will we be whitewater rafting in Colorado? Will we be Dog Sledding in winter the BWCA? Will we be riding bicycles to St. Louis? Will we be kayaking the Apostle Islands? 

What's your idea? Each idea needs some roughed out details/plan and a Scout to "sponsor" further research. 

FYI - The current plan is to put in for a Philmont 2021 high-adventure. We will also do a SHT trip in '21 for Philmont crew training and another crew for everybody else.

Gear Spotlight: Ditty Bags
Every camper knows keeping your gear in order is critically important. A great way to help keep gear organized is to keep it gathered and stored in its "set" place. Ditty bags are one way to do this effectively. They come in many shapes and sizes, anybody that has seen my pack, knows I use everything from snack-sized ziplocks to 5x7 Tyvek envelopes, 3x6 mesh bags with zippers or drawcords, to small 8x8 stuff saks. They all look different, and they all consistently hold the same stuff so I know where my compass, extra batteries, tent stakes, or lighter. I know which ones I have with me for each trip and therefore I know where my stuff is for quick access, easy packing and effective organization. 

Scoutmaster Minute: Tigger or Eeyore

Pooh, Piglet, Roo, Tigger, and Eeyore are all good pals. They play together, go on adventures, and learn things. Each of them cares deeply for their buddies.

When you think of "Tigger", what comes to mind? What is he like? (happy, silly, energetic, positive, not too smart, carefree, ...)
When you think of "Eeyore", what comes to mind? (sad, slow, dejected, pessimistic)

When anything happens, Eeyore expects the worst. He expects the weather to be rainy, the shelter to be uncomfortable, the hike to be too long, the water to be too warm and the food too cold. He sets his expectations way low so he is seldom disappointed, but then he has nothing to look forward to.

Tigger, on the other hand, sees fun and adventure in everything. He hops rather than walk, jumps rather than run, and bounces rather than sit still. He sees the rainbow through the clouds, notices something new at every step of a hike, and believes every minute of life is a gift to enjoy. He may not think things through, but he is always looking ahead to the next adventure.

So, who are you? Are you more of an Eeyore, plodding through life, sure that school will be hard, friends will be few, and there won't be much fun to do on the weekend? Or are you like Tigger, ready to make every task a game, every day an adventure, and every challenge an opportunity?

We will be holding our quarterly Court of Honor on Monday. Scouts will be recognized for their achievements over the summer. Scouts should be dressed in their best uniforms and bring a dessert to share. 

Families highly encouraged to attend.

Scoutmaster Minute: Planting Acorns is a Mighty Idea

Founded in 1379, New College, Oxford is one of the oldest Oxford colleges. It has, like other colleges, hosts a great dining hall with a vaulted roof supported by huge beams fashioned from old-growth oak (think Hogwarts Dining Hall). These huge oak beams span across the top, as large as two feet square, and forty-five feet long each. 

Six hundred years later, about a century ago, some busy entomologist went up into the roof of the dining hall with a penknife and poked at the beams and found that they were full of beetles. This was reported to the College Council, which met the news with some dismay, beams this large were now very hard, if not impossible to come by. “Where would they get beams of that caliber?” they worried. The beams had so deteriorated that the roof was in danger of collapsing. The beams needed to be replaced. But where, in that time, could those repairing the building find giant oak trees of such an age and quality as had been available to the original builders?

It's important to realize these colleges are endowed with pieces of land scattered across the country which are run by a college Forester. They called in the College Forester, who of course had not been near the college itself for some years, and asked him if there were any oaks for possible use. 

Fortunately, the answer lay right outside the chapel door. When the College was founded, a grove of oaks had been planted to replace the beams in the dining hall when they became beetly, because oak beams always eventually become beetly. This plan had been passed down from one Forester to the next for over six hundred years saying "Don’t cut the oaks. They're for the College Hall.” 

The original builders of the chapel had known that at some point far in the future, the structure would need new oak beams, and so they had planted acorns in the churchyard. Over the centuries, a grove of oak trees had grown to full maturity. New acorns have been planted.

Troop Meeting • Monday, 6:30-8:00pm • MUMC

We will be having ELECTIONS, also it is the last call for submission of merit badge blue cards before our Court of Honor Sept 9. Scouts should place the completed (& legible) "Application" part of the blue card in the scout closet envelope or hand the card to Mrs. Barber at the troop meeting. There is no Scout meeting next week on the Labor Day Holiday. 

Boards of Review

We have several boards of review scheduled. Boards of Review are for Rank Advancement (Tenderfoot - Eagle). If your scout is scheduled you have been contacted by Melissa Barber. Scouts should be in their best uniforms with a neckerchief, sash (if they have one), etc.

Make sure to have your Handbook!!!

HIKING

We are tentatively scheduled for a 5-mile Hike on Sept. 7. Generally, this means meeting at MUMC, and following a scout planned route. A five mile hike will likely take Scouts 2-2.5 hours (think 8:00-10:30). I'm unable to attend Sept 7, but if we can get a scout to plan a route and some adults to take a walk (and attendance), I'm happy to help communicate & coordinate. Class B is cool, water, daypack, snack if you need it, proper footwear. I'm even happy to help a scout plan a route. I usually use google maps or map my run or something like https://www.mapsdirections.info/en/draw-route-google-maps/.

Scoutmaster Minute - A Warped Wheel 

If you loosen five or six adjoining spokes on a bicycle wheel, it will warp out of shape so that it no longer makes a true circle. Pretty soon you're going to have a bumpy ride.

Your character is something like a bike wheel.

The spokes are a series of rules that in Scouting we call the Scout Law. The points of our Scout Law are guides to help your character stay true.

Day-to-day, if you get loose and sloppy on any point of the Scout Law, the result will be the same as loosening the spokes on a bike wheel. Your personality will start to warp out of shape.

One way to stay true to yourself is to keep your observance of the Scout Law always foremost in your mind. When doubts creep in and you might consider violating one of the points of the Law, think about the warped, out-of-shape bike wheel and resolve to live up to the ideals of Scouting.
