Scouting University • March 30 • Folwell Hall UMN

Spring 2019 MBU on March 30th at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities! This is a very popular event and will fill up.

There are 10 merit badge options for the morning session and 9 options in the afternoon. Please read the entire paragraph at the beginning of the registration form.

Cost: $25 full day (morning, lunch and afternoon session); $15 one session There is an extra charge of $5 for those who attend Space Exploration.

Please also bring this form already printed and filled.

Pizza lunch is provided for the Scouts who plan to stay for the morning and afternoon sessions. We have a part of the form for allergy information so even if the allergy is not pizza related, please still provide all allergies since we may provide other snacks.

This program is for older scouts; all participants must be age 14 by September 1st to participate. They must be prepared for the physical demands of a high adventure trek. This is a great adventure for the Werewolf Patrol! 
 
The Sea Kayaking Program in the Apostle Islands is the top tier of Tomahawk High Adventure. This trip is 5 days long. Scouts spend 4 nights on 3 different islands. Sign up is open for only 12 participants. 9 spots remain.

Ripley Rendezvous 2019 will be held the Camp Ripley Army National Guard Training Facility, Camp Ripley, Little Falls, MN. This springtime event is truly a unique opportunity to utilize the training facility's ranges and buildings in presenting three distinct levels of involvement. This is a Jamboree style camp, so we'll be tenting and cooking in our site.

Scoutmaster's Minute
"A Wrapper A Day" - that's one of my mottos.

When I'm out walking, I try to pick up one wrapper a day - it's usually more than that, unfortunately. I have no idea how the wrappers get there, but there's never a shortage of them.

I'm 43 years old and I have never actually seen someone throw a wrapper on the ground on purpose. I have no idea what sort of person does it. It just doesn't make sense to me, but there seem to be more than enough of them around.

So, I just do what I can when I can - just a wrapper a day.

Troop 1 has 30 scouts. If we all did A Wrapper A Day, that would be over 10,000 wrappers in a year - and that would be about 100 pounds. Crazy right.


Of course, it's up to you to help or not, and no one will know if you do. But, wouldn't it be great if one day I couldn't find a wrapper for that day?

Troop Meeting Monday, 2/25 6:00-8:00
We'll mostly be helping the Cub Scout Pack work on their cars. There are a few bits of troop business, but we're looking mostly to provide some good examples and cheerful service to the pack. Zach Jones will have his Eagle Scout Board of Review at 7pm - wish him luck!

Snowbase was a warm success! Despite the snow, we saw live mosquitoes on Saturday and the drive home on Sunday was uneventful! Meanwhile, lots of fun was had. The consensus was to do it again next year! Maybe doing the Dog Sledding, Logging Camp and/or Spearhead adventures.

Reminder about Uniforms
Scouts Always will need their uniform for camp. We ALWAYS travel in uniform. So if you're meeting at MUMC, show up with your scout shirt on (and tucked in; neckerchief is awesome too!) As a rule, if you're not sure, default to wearing your Class A is a good choice; it's never wrong to be in uniform when scouting. At meetings, we wear our uniforms, at events we wear our uniforms, at meals we wear our uniforms, on service projects we wear our uniforms. The "Class-B" T-shirt is not technically a uniform, it can be the most appropriate sometimes, but we'll let you know when.

The PLC decided NOT to do a hike but rather leave in the evening to accommodate the overnight ski event at Buck Hill for scouts on Friday (see below). Several scouts want to do that and get some rest before RAD, so on Saturday we'll meet at MUMC at 5:30pm for a 6pm departure arriving by 7:15pm to RAD Zoo for pizza, evening program and sleeping (indoors on the concrete floor - bring a sleeping pad and an indoor bag). We plan to be home by 9am Sunday.

Grey Wolf Youth National Youth Leadership Training

Each year Troop 1 is able to send 1-2 scouts to a week-long youth leadership camp run by the council. 

Grey Wolf National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a one-week program held in June and July, it replicates the first three weeks of typical unit operations, including patrol leader's council meetings, troop/crew meetings, patrol meetings, and planning for a big event. 

Becoming a better leader is the theme, but many aspects apply to daily life. You'll need the desire to make a long-term commitment to master the skills and tools to benefit our troop. Grey Wolf NYLT is unlike any other Scout camp you've attended. You won't work on merit badges, advancement, or have daily swims. You'll play a lot of games, sing songs, and do fun activities that promote team-building. Get ready for a fast-paced week and prepare to learn for yourself and for the benefit of Troop 1.

My nominations are due Friday. Scouts must be First Class Rank or above and need to be at least 14 years of age, or 13 and have completed 8th grade.

Merit Badges 
What are they?  MBs are a secondary area of the Scouts BSA advancement program. Unlike ranks, there is a degree of choice in the merit badge program. A sub-group of merit badges are known as "Eagle required" merit badges. To earn Eagle Scout, most of these badges must be earned although some are "either/or" badges. To earn Eagle scouts also have to earn some merit badge they choose. And there's a merit badge for almost everything - heres a full list. 


Where to earn a Merit Badge?

Once you have a blue card from your Scoutmaster, call or contact a counselor on your own. You can find a counselor list via Scoutbook or ask me.
Go to a Merit Badge class at Scoutmaster Bucky or The North Star Scouting Museum or at Scouting University (March 30 - look for info soon).

Scoutmaster's Minute
A compass is a simple instrument. It reads the magnetic forces of the earth and points to magnetic north. If you get it too close to another magnet, it can give you a false reading. If you don't know how to account for declination, in certain parts of the country you can be in big trouble. In the hands of a skilled scout, it can help keep you on the right path. Like any skill practice makes permanent. 

Like the needle of a compass, our morals guide us on the paths of life. When we're orienteering, sometimes we take a bad reading or miss a clue on the map, and end up a bit lost having to backtrack. Scouting helps give us practice with both compasses. Remain true to your Scout Oath and Law, and you can keep on the right path.

We're working on cleaning out the closet. Any scout can attend to help, but the PLC wanted to get this job done as well as stick to our "no meetings on holidays" policy. We're not in uniform tomorrow, wear work clothes, and we're meeting a little earlier to try and get the job done! It's a copacetic solution. 

Snow Base • Feb 22-24, 2019
Tomahawk Scout Reservation 
• Meet at MUMC on Friday Night at 5:30pm we need to be on the road by 6:00. 
• Eat Dinner in advance or bring one for the car ride. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Tomahawk. It's a good idea to have something non-electronic to do while on the car-rides, you might want to pack a small daypack with a snack and/or car activity like a book & headlamp. 
• Basic Schedule for the Weekend
Please review the Equipment Packing List; we are participating in the Snow Huskies program. Please be certain to bring non-cotton long underwear and a winter jacket/shell. 
• Gear List - View What's provided and what you need to bring (not much!)
• Scouts will travel in Uniform. 
• There is a trading post if you'd like a souvenir they'll have some for purchase. All participants will get a patch.

Scoutmaster's Minute
Way back in the 1968 Olympics, Bob Beamon set a long-jump record that many thought would never be broken, but eventually, it was. A young boxer named George Foremen won a gold medal and paraded around the ring with an American flag, instilling pride in many Americans. But, one athlete named John Stephen Akhwari from Tanzania, a marathon runner, probably made the longest lasting impression on people during those Olympics. 
While he was running his race, he stumbled and fell, severely injuring his knee and ankle. After receiving first aid, he did what no one expected and he got back in the race. Long after everyone else had finished and left, he limped into the near-empty stadium to the cheers of a small crowd that was still there and he finished his final lap. 
When asked why he continued the race after he was so badly hurt with no chance to win he replied: "My country did not send me 7,000 miles to begin a race - they sent me to finish the race". 

Does each of you accept responsibility to finish a task when you start one or do you take the easy way out when the going gets tough? Do you keep your promises when you make them, even the ones you make to yourself? A person who doesn't keep their word will not be respected and will not be trusted. What kind of person do you want to be remembered as?
